classification in high school

It is apparent that high school has many different types of students. The “type” of the students effects the way the teens inter act with each other greatly. For example, as humans, tend to get along with people who posses attributes similar to the attributes we may have. In high school this is even more obvious than anywhere else we see this.
There are so many different types of students in high school. The most obvious one’s include the popular kids, the sluts, the punks, and the nerds. These classifications are entirely based on stereo types.
The “popular kids” usually participate in sports, particularly football or cheerleading. These people are often considered attractive and tend to have wealthy parents and wild parties. They are known by everyone attending the school, not necessarily liked by everyone though. It is said that people are envious of the “popular kids”.
The next group is the “sluts”. the sluts often wear revealing clothing and flaunt themselves in a way that is irresponsible. They are said to sleep around. “sluts” tend to disrespect their bodies. Also a common another common stereotype associated with “sluts” is that they do not posses a good home life or lack a decent father figure. Although this is not necessarily true, many girls who take on the role of a “slut” are merely desperate for attention, although they tend to seek out the wrong kind of attention from the wrong people. This surrounds them in negativity and cause drama and rumors to be spread about them in a high school environment.
The next group is the “punks”. the punks are often associated with stereotypes such as getting bad grades and breaking the law. The “punks” often do illegal drugs or simply just smoke, maybe in attempt to rebel against their parents or just to rebel in general. “punks” are often associated with alcoholics as well. Also “punks” are said to listen to heavy metal or rock music and where t-shirts and tight pants. The whole stereotype of being a “punk” is based off of the concept of teenage rebellion.
Last but not least, we have the “nerds”. The one’s typically considered as “nerds” are almost always extremely smart and well behaved. A common stereotype of nerds is that they wear classes, suspenders and button up shirts. This obviously is not always true. They are often thought to be mama’s boys and not have any association with girls. Sometimes nerds are even considered social awkward or as outcasts.
As you probably have noticed stereotypes in high school classify many different types of teens. What we wear and how we act associates us with a stereotype. This affects the way teenagers interact with in another. But the truth is we are all very different and although we may have some traits associated with these stereotypes that does not mean anyone should classify a teen to fit under one of these categories based on clothing or intelligence. Personality really should be the thing to judge.

definition essay blog: hero

What does one picture when the word hero reaches one’s ear? Many picture a tall, muscular man in tights, others in vision a fire fighter or policeman, maybe even the president. But what does it mean to be a hero? The mythology a hero was typically sought to be one whom posses god like qualities or a warrior with amazing strength and courage. In comic books the hero always seems to be tall, muscular, handsome, and of course, dressed in a colorful outfit, draped with a cape. But a real hero is more than someone who is courageous and saves peoples lives. A hero can be someone who inspires people to be better, someone who stands up for what they believe in, a leader.

A hero may not even be a person; a hero could be anything really. For example a dog, a dog could be one’s hero. You are probably wondering how. There are many disabled people in this world who require dogs to help them with everyday activities. Many blind people have theses dogs, called seeing eye dogs, that help them do things as simple as crossing the street. These dogs are extremely smart and keep their owners safe. There are also dogs that work for the police department. These dogs are often referred to as K-9 dogs. They help the police department find drugs and solve crimes. Another heroic dog is a guard dog. Many people have dogs in their homes. Suppose a robber invades some one’s home, the guard dog could attack the criminal as well as bark, acting as an alarm and the home owners would wake up and be able to call the police. Dogs can be heroes, from something as simple as a guard dog to something as advanced as a police dog.
Many people look up to family members as heroes. A hero can be someone who one looks up to and aspires to be like. Many people look up to their brothers, their fathers, their aunts, etc. A hero possesses admirable qualities. Maybe one wants to be like their father. Perhaps one has a caring and successful father and one aspires to be just like him. This is yet another form of a hero.
A hero could even be a fictional character from a book or movie. Although it sounds silly its true. A character such as Forrest Gump could be one’s hero. Although the character is not real, they still can be a real hero. The character still is inspirational. One may be inspired by a character to always be one’s self or to fallow ones dreams. Many may gather false hopes from these characters, however the inspiration that these fictional characters display is real and still heroic in the eyes of many.
Others may look for a hero in celebrities; actors, musicians, sports stars, etc. For example, my hero is John Lennon, a musician and previous member of the rock group The Beatles. John Lennon was a hero because he was inspiring. He inspired many to participate in making music. But what really made John Lennon a hero was his leadership and the way he stood up for what he believed in. Lennon wanted nothing more than peace. He stood up against the Vietnam war and inspired many to strive for peace. In my eyes, this makes him a hero.
A hero does not have to be one who saves a life, although that is what the word hero is often associated with. A hero is someone inspirational. A leader. Of course a hero could be someone who saves one’s life, but I believe a hero is more than that. I believe a hero is someone who is looked up to. Anyone can be a hero. A hero could be as simple as someone who can make one smile everyday. It could be as simple as someone that not only allows love into their life, but gives love out.
So ask yourself; what is a hero to me? Maybe you will find an answer that you would not have said preciously. Maybe your hero is your husband or wife, your children, or your parents. Or maybe your hero is your guard dog, or maybe even a cancer survivor or a baseball player. Whoever your hero may be, your hero is the inspiration in your life.
Heroes are around every corner. A hero can be in any form. So what does it mean to be a hero? Well really a hero is someone looked up to by others, a hero means so many different things to many different people. So next time you hear the word hero, I hope you don’t think of a tall man in tights, like the guys right out of the comic books. I hope you think of the person in your life that inspires you to do the things you do. The person or thing you aspire to be like. The person you look up to.
It is apparent that the people often considered to be heroes are adult males. This is not always the case. A hero can be anyone or anything. For example, a young girl surviving cancer. This young girl could inspire others dealing with cancer to push through. She could inspire many people to take part in helping people with cancer. This little girl is a hero. A real life hero.

cause and effect essay: Does High School Really Prepare Students for College?

If you have ever been through high school, you probably know the feeling of the pressures of school weighing you down. As a junior in high school, I can honestly say that many students, like me, undergo extreme levels of stress and pressure just in hopes of being accepted into the college the student desires and in hopes that the student will be prepared for college. But for what? Is taking three AP classes and staying up until two in the morning scanning the words of a textbook through drowsy eyes really worth it? Will high school truly give high school students the experience and knowledge to succeed in college?
In high school they are many types of teens, however, many can categorize all the student into to categories. The first would be the hardworking, attentive, always gets good grades, “smart kid” and the second would be the lazy slacker, or the “dumb kid”. the sad thing about high school is the teachers don’t necessarily treat the two equally. In fact the “dumb kids” are typically the ones who need more attention, but the teachers always seem to pay more attention to the “smart kids” when it comes to schoolwork. In my opinion many teachers see it like this: if a child has no desire to learn it is not a teachers job to motivate them, it is the teachers job to teach the students with a desire to learn and go on to college and make something of themselves. Of course this does not apply to all teachers, but it seems to be a common occurrence.
The “smart kids” may be given more attention, which typically means teachers, as well as parents, expect a lot more form these students. The “smart kids” are expected to take honors courses and go to a fancy college, in many ways they are expected to be the “ideal student”. The ideal student works hard to achieve goals, is motivated and ready to learn, is always prepared, and receives good grades. I believe that teachers and parents often believe honors students are superhuman or something to that nature. Of course I do not literally mean that teachers think that honors students possess super powers or something, but teachers and parents put a lot of pressure on students and the students are still expected to succeed all the time. I know this from personal experience. Our teachers and parents have very high expectations for us “smart kids”, which puts a lot of pressure on us kids.
So is all this pressure worth it? Every high school student has the same requirements that they must reach, which means every student is expected to learn, for the most part, the same things. There are not enough classes provided by high schools that can really prepare everyone for college. For instance, it is obvious that not every student will go into college prepared because they may have not taken the classes to prepare them for their future major. Not every student is going to be a future author, scientist, or engineer. Maybe some kids desire to be artists, or pilots, marine biologists or pediatricians. Although students can benefit from what they have learned in high school, they are not truly prepared because they have no prior knowledge about their desired major or career.
Also, in high school students are not yet fully independent. The students are in one small classroom crammed with thirty five noisy teens, some socializing, others trying to learn. High school students have peers to refer to for help and share most of their classes with those peers. However in college, students are more independent. Many move out of their parents houses and go to separate colleges from their friends. In college one picks the times of their classes and has a variety of different people they’ve never seen before. Another thing is socializing in class and referring to your peers for help in class in not as common as in high school. In college students usually all have a desire to learn and are very attentive to their professors. This is much different form the life of high school.
Because of the many differences between high school and college it is unlikely that students will be one hundred percent prepared for life after high school. The basic classes all students are required don’t allow students to step outside boundaries and study for their future major. Students don’t always have access to the recourses or classes they need to get a head start for college. Also high school is a place where one is meant to find one’s independence. However many don’t find it un till they have reached college and realize they have become an adult and are forced to accept their independence. The events that take place in high school can have some amount of impact on the college life that fallows, but the effects is typically that the student is not fully prepared.

The Beatles vs Justin Bieber : compare and contrast

I recently came across the idea that the Beatles are an icon of pop music. One of my generation might say Justin Bieber is an icon of pop music as well. So to demonstrate why the Beatles should not be classified as pop, the two must be compared.
I suppose that the two musical influences have some things in common. For example both artists or groups were and are still very popular, and seemed to have become an icon in the music industry. Also both of their tours were for sure sold out; the seats piled with dedicated screaming fans, whom were inspired and captivated by the music each produced. However I believe the two musical parties share much less similarities compared to the number of differences they share.
Justin Bieber, a small boy recognized for his signature hair flip and girly voice among screaming fan girls, has become quite a commodity in the music industry. Justin Bieber’s music appeals to primarily young girls. This is most likely because Bieber’s lyrics are simple, repetitive, flow to a common pop beat, and talk about love and heart ache, not to mention, for most his supporters, Bieber possesses “dreamy“ features. To a young girl the young pop singer’s music displays sensitivity, creativity, and talent. To people not captivated by stereotypical teeny-bobber pop music, Bieber produces mainstream with catchy lyrics repeated over and over to a pop beat.
The Beatles are most recognizable for their British accents and off course there unusual lyrics. The Beatles are a musical icon; everyone has heard of this legendary band. The Beatles music appeals to so many different kinds of people. The songs the band produced were of many subjects. They were songs people could, and still can, relate to. that’s why people love them so much is there music is completely different from anything else made. Their music appeals to a wide range of people from rockers to teeny-bobbers, from 60’s lovers to mainstream music lovers.
Justin Bieber’s inspiration or musical influence most likely came from people such as Jessie McCartney or Erin Carter. His musical inspiration was for sure founded on the principles of modern pop music.
The Beatles gained inspiration form classic rock such as Elvis Presley. In fact, john Lennon started his first band because he was so captivated by rock and roll music. John Lennon bought his 1st guitar and started his first band, which later down the road, after a few band members came and left, became the legendary Beatles.
Justin Bieber’s lyrics often come together to form a stereotypical, cheesy, love song or “inspirational” song, as some may put it. His music also tends to be extremely repetitive and have the same type of simple pop beat, produced by a series of computers and musical machines or devices, supporting the words of his song. For example, in the song “One time” by Justin Bieber, Bieber says “ I’m gonna tell you one time.” approximately 34 times in the song. As one could probably tell if thy heard the song, the song is very repetitive and flows to a simplistic pop beat. It is a song about love, however it does not resemble romance. The song seems to resemble modern pop music.
In contrast to Justin Bieber, The Beatles produced unique and meaningful, as well as inspirational lyrics supported by a talented band consisting of: a drummer, two guitarists, and a bass player; rock and roll music. John Lennon and Paul McCartney often wrote the lyrics for the bands songs, however the other members of the band, George Harrison and Ringo star participated in the band’s song writing as well. For example George Harrison wrote and preformed the song “Something”, a classic love song. Unlike Bieber’s song “One Time”, The Beatles song something is a true love song; a song that really resembles romance. And instead of flowing to a simplistic pop beat, the lyrics perfectly blend with the sound of a guitar. The lyrics of most the Beatles songs, such as “Something”, were meaningful, creative, and unique.
Justin Bieber has a very distinguishable voice. One might say it is high pitch like a girl, or a boy who hasn’t yet reached puberty. Justin Bieber sounds similar to Jessie McCartney or Erin Carter. A typical pop voice, often sounding the same each time. Justin Bieber’s voice makes much of his songs sound all too similar to the rest of his music. Not only does it make most his songs sound similar, it doesn’t provide any variety or unique qualities; thousands of pop singers come and go, none sounding too different from the next.
The Beatles can not be distinguished or recognized by the sound of only one voice. The Beatles are made up of four very talented voices. One quality that separates Bieber’s voice apart from the great voices of the Beatles, is that the Beatles were British, and there accents shown through their singing voices. The lead singers were Paul McCartney and John Lennon but George Harrison and Ringo Star also participated in vocals. Sometimes the four band members would all sing in one song. The four very different and powerful voices provide variety and harmony.
Justin Bieber may have become an icon for my generation but that does not mean they will last and spread there music to the world through a long lasting legacy, as the Beatles have. For example, Erin Carter was iconic generations ago, some even would claim, at the time, that Carter was the face of pop. But where is Cater now? The world may never know. This could be Justin Bieber ten years from now for all the world knows. Personally, I don’t for see Justin Bieber creating a lasting musical legacy.
The Beatles have left behind, what is often considered, the greatest legacy known to music. The Beatles have been around since the 1960s and yet their music is still popular and influencing lives today. The Beatles can be recognized by almost anyone in America and throughout the world. They truly are and icon in not the world of pop, but the world of music.
For the most part I would say the evidence above would draw one to conclude that the Beatles really are not pop, in fact I would say the Beatles have more qualities that appear to be good old rock and roll music, but I suppose that is a matter of opinion, however it is very clear that Justin Bieber and The Beatles, despite their few similarities, are extremely different in so many ways.

The Impact of American Society on Modern Language: Conotation Blog

When you hear the word “gay”, what do you really hear? Originally the word gay was a word to describe one’s feelings. For example, someone in earlier generations, might have said something like: “I’m gay because it has been such a wonderful day”. As you can see this word was a word of positive connotation; a word defining someone who was giddy, or happy. But it seems that through the generations, society has morphed the word gay from a word describing excitement and happiness, to a word that often makes many feel uncomfortable, or insulted.
Modern language is degrading. In our society we take a word, such as gay, and change it to something completely different from its original meaning. In modern times today the word gay seems to consist of two meanings.
The first way gay is commonly used today, and one of the correct ways, is to describe someone who is a homosexual. The use of the word gay to describe a person of homosexual origin is politically correct, however this connotation of the word has grown to be an uncomfortable connotation for many. This word is the correct way to describe someone who is a homosexual, but our society has degraded the word; giving it an insulting feel. Most people don’t prefer to call someone “gay” if they are a homosexual. This is because the word has been used in such a negative way so frequently that people now feel that its as if they are insulting someone who is, indeed, gay.
The second way the word gay is used, the way it is used most often, is to insult one’s intelligence. Now a days in American culture, this word is used all the time. You may hear someone say “That’s so gay.” or “You are hella gay.”, this clearly is an offensive way to use the word. For many, the use of the word gay is just a mere bad habit; a word culture has excepted to define someone who is behaving idiotically. But it doesn’t change the fact that this use of the word is incorrect and offensive, not only to homosexuals but to all Americans who respect their language! So what does this tell us about society? That society thinks gays are stupid? How could society degrade a whole community by giving the word such an offensive definition?
Society, as a whole, is a vicious and starving monster. When the monster encounters something different from itself, it eats it up. After it chews it spits it back up; regurgitates whatever perception it may have. Once the monster of society gags up its perception, it pries open the door to language with its sharp, yellow claws. And wallah! A new, offensive and incorrect word has branched of an original meaning; providing society only with yet another shameful impact on its language. The word gay is only one example of this madness. Society has done this with a countless number of words, and our language is no longer the same as it was before. It has been degraded dramatically by American society, and sadly, I don’t for see language being restored back to the way it was ment to be.

everything is an argument: Tuesdays with Morrie

Did you know everything is an argument? According to chapter one of Everything is an Argument anything and everything can be considered an argument, or make a statement. The author states that even a piece of clothing or a joke can be an argument. He also talks about the many types of arguments such as; to inform to convince, to explore, and so on. I believe this statement is accurate; everything, indeed, can be an argument. Recently I read an outstanding, powerful, and moving book called Tuesdays with Morrie. This book was written by Mitch Albom. In this book Albom presents his old professor’s enlightening argument to the world through the book, as well as incorporates his own subtle argument in to the story.
Morrie’s argument is that society takes the important things in life, such as love and compassion, for granted and that society is fearful of death and loneliness. He writes the lessons of his old teacher, and friend, Morrie, to describe that society must not revolve around materialistic things, and that humans need to appreciate and understand the important things in life.
Morrie introduces quite a few arguments that tie into his main argument. In the book Mitch Albom quotes Morrie’s wise words; “the most important thing in life is to learn how to give out love, and let it come in.”, this statement is a considerably powerful argument itself. It states that love is the most important thing in life, on may disagree with this, however I agree completely. The fact that this conjures up a debate makes this statement an argument. An argument is not to persuade or convince someone to join one’s side, or agree with one’s opinion, but to strike conversation to eventually come to a reasonable conclusion; to find the truth. Another argument of Morrie’s that Mitch Albom describes is that to learn to live life one must learn to give it up; to accept the obvious fact, that many deny internally, that on day everyone, including yourself, will die. Morrie says that once one has accepted the fact their life is going to end one day, then that person will learn to live; learn to appreciate life for what it is and truly distinguish the difference between the true importance of life in contrast to materialistic things. Obviously people in internal denial, or denial without even really understanding or realizing they are in a state of denial, would most likely not agree with this given claim. In an other’s eyes, this statement would lead them to discover a whole new perspective and learn the truth of life. And others may just simply agree, but most will learn from this argument, which brings me to my next topic: the type of argument provided by this insightful book.
This argument is an argument designed with the main purpose of informing. Mitch Albom’s argument made in Tuesdays with Morrie is an argument to inform, and the reader should know this because of the structure of the book and the diction of the author, as well as the overall purpose of the book. This book was written a narrative structure. In the book, the author describes his Tuesdays with Morrie as “lessons” taught by Morrie for his “final class”. this indicated that the argument was an argument to inform because of the diction the author chose. When the reader analyzes the text one can see that these “lessons” are really informing the reader. When Morrie shares his wise words, or teachings, with Mitch Albom in the novel, he is also sharing his thoughts with the reader. The reader learns Morrie’s many valuable and important lessons while reading, and these lessons impact the reader by bringing them into a conversation. You could say that Mitch is inviting you into Morrie’s class; introducing to the reader an argument.
The argument made by Mitch Albom is not actually stated, but implied. The author’s argument is that everyone in this world is capable of self growth and it is never to late to grow; for growing continues from the moment of birth from the moment of death in a course of a life. Mitch Albom makes is argument implied by using an unique literary method and structure. After each chapter the author wrote italicized passages that typically described events in his past. As one reads the novel one may realize that the Mitch italicized stories and the Mitch in the current time of the story have changed, and continue to grow in so many ways. This indicated a subtle argument that its never to late to grow.
This argument was made by the author to inform, just as Morrie’s argument, or arguments were designed to do. When the reader picks up on this argument, they begin to question their own self growth. This opens the reader’s mind to a conversation or debate. But Mitch Albom makes this argument to help the reader acquire there own truth about personal growth; to help the reader understand how they have grown, and how they are still in the processes of growing throughout their lives.
So there you have it, an argument can be proposed to inform, like In the book Tuesdays With Morrie, written by journalist, sports columnist, and author. Morrie’s argument that Mitch Albom describes is not only powerful, heartwarming, and even life changing, but it is informative as well! The argument made my Morrie shows us that love is the most important thing of all, and as human beings, we often take tat for granted. He also teaches one must accept the reality of death in order to truly experience life to its fullest. And the implied argument that the author provides in the story is very informative as well. It gets the reader thinking about all the growth they have experienced, the growth taking place in their lives at the current moment, and the growth they will experience in the future. Mitch Albom’s argument teaches one that it is never to late to grow and self growth is constant throughout a lifetime. In conclusion, the book Tuesdays With Morrie provides many informative arguments. So next time you think an argument is always to win over an opinion, reconsider and remember that an argument can be used for many things, such as to inform.
